Women’s health has always been a crucial topic. Over the years, significant progress has been made in addressing various health concerns, including reproductive health, mental well-being, and chronic conditions. However, there remains much to be accomplished in eliminating disparities and ensuring that all women, regardless of socioeconomic status or location, receive the necessary care.
Personally, I have faced challenges with obesity, diabetes, and circulation issues, among other minor health concerns. I have always had a deep love for cake, a passion that took a turn when I found myself hospitalized due to diabetic symptoms like constant thirst, fatigue, and, in my case, nosebleeds. One particularly frightening incident involved a nosebleed that lasted over fifteen minutes, during which the ER doctor diagnosed me with diabetes. After consulting with a specialist, I received a list of foods to avoid helping manage my blood sugar levels. Sadly, carbohydrates and sugar have become my sworn enemies.

Over the past three years, I’ve had to take charge of my health. I understand that aging brings its own set of challenges, and I have experienced a few minor health scares when my body doesn’t respond as I expect. I have lost a significant amount of weight and drastically altered my diet to minimize carbs and sugar intake. Those close to me know that exercise is a four-letter word in my vocabulary. However, my family has taken my health seriously and has encouraged me to get moving. My grandson has been a great motivator, often acting as my walking companion—though it often feels more like jogging, as I find myself chasing after him! It’s incredible how contagious youthful energy can be; having him by my side makes physical activity enjoyable rather than a chore. Together, we have explored numerous parks and trails, each step strengthening our bond and my determination to stay healthy.

Throughout this journey, I have learned that self-care extends beyond physical health; it also involves nurturing the mind and spirit. Incorporating meditation and mindfulness practices into my routine has provided moments of peace and clarity amidst life’s busyness.
On this National Hike Day, I feel grateful for the unwavering support and encouragement from my family and friends. Their love serves as a constant reminder of why this journey is meaningful. As I continue to embrace a healthier lifestyle, I look forward to many more years filled with adventures, laughter, and treasured memories with my loved ones. So, with all of this in mind, I encourage you to get up and move your body, sis!
